The country and folks
This itinerary is designed specifically for cruise ship travelers who have only one day to explore Lombok. The tour aims to provide an opportunity to understand the local way of life while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the South to Central West part of the island. The tour includes three main attractions in the central part of the island: the local traditional market, the water palace of Taman Narmada Temple, the waterfalls Benang Stokel or Benang Kelambu, and the weaving village Sukarara, where all the women should be able to weave before getting married.
The tour starts at 8:30 AM with a pick-up from Tanjung Mas seaport in Lembar, western Lombok. After a 45-minute drive from the port, the first stop is at the traditional market of Pasar Bertais to see the locals going by. This market is the largest traditional market in the city and offers various things like fashion, vegetables, and many kinds of spices for Indonesia’s traditional foods or Sasak's local people.
At 9:15 AM, the tour proceeds to the next destination, Taman Narmada Park. This is the city’s largest Hindu temple and was built in 1724 by Anak Agung Karangasem from Bali. As the main Hindu temple of Bali, the Balinese also make pilgrimages to honor their ancestors at this temple. This is also the miniature of Mount Rinjani a sacred mountain for the Balinese people while for the locals this is just a place they live from the tourism industry at that time.
At 11:15 AM, the next destination is a visit to the Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfalls in the Rinjani National Park. It is located on the southern slope of Mount Rinjani with hiking opportunities in the Rinjani National Park and swimming opportunities in the Benang Kelambu waterfall.
At 2:00 PM, we will visit the traditional village of Sukarara in the south on the way to the Lembar port. The village of Sukarara is home to many intricate and beautifully woven cloths, which form an important part of Lombok’s identity. The town specializes in Songket, an intricately patterned woven fabric created by adding gold or silver thread through it. This thread stands out against the other colors, creating a shimmering effect. The motifs of the Songket are diverse; some will showcase a flower motif or chicken motif, each with a unique meaning. Woven items are created using cotton fabric, silver threads, nylon, and silk. The dyes are made from natural materials like betel vine lead, bark, turmeric, or tamarind. Weaving is by hand, and most locals spend their days creating. Anything from dresses, table covers, blankets, scarves, and cloth can be created. You will also have the opportunity to try weaving for yourself and learn about the complexities and processes. Most of the woven fabrics are made at home, with many gift stores selling them too.
At 3:15 PM, we will return to the port at Tanjung Mas in Lembar in western Lombok.
